I’ve known I wanted to have a coffee shop since I was 12, not because of the coffee, but because of what it felt like to be there. Coffee was always part of my life growing up. My mom and I would drink it together, and all the women in my family did too. It was never just a drink…it was time together, conversation, connection. My dad would take us to coffee shops too, and it was never really about what we ordered, it was about slowing down, talking, just being together. He always told me to be independent, to build something of my own, to never rely on anyone else to create the life I wanted. And then when I was 16, I lost him, and everything got really quiet. I was trying to figure out who I was, what my purpose was… I just knew it had to be more, more than just doing what everyone tells you to do.
I found my way back to coffee.
I fell in love with my local specialty coffee shop, and it became my first job, but it was so much more than that. It was where I studied, where I cried, where I went when I felt alone. It became my third place. Looking back, it was never really about the coffee—it was the slowness of it, the conversations, the feeling of sitting down and being present. Before “romanticizing your life” was even a phrase, I was already doing it, creating small moments that made life feel safe again. I went on to get my master’s degree and build the career I thought I was supposed to have, but I always came back to coffee because it grounded me, it gave me rhythm, it gave me community.
And now I’m building a coffee cart, not just to serve coffee, but to create that same space for someone else—a place to land, a place to feel seen, a place to just be. Favorite Daughter started as a joke because I’m the only daughter, so obviously I’m the favorite, but somewhere along the way it became something more.
At 25, I found my faith in a way I never had before, and I started to understand that maybe this was never just about coffee. Maybe it’s always been about creating a place where people feel loved. And I realized something else too. I’m His favorite daughter, and so are you.
